How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?

How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?

Is this possible? Can you take a commercially produced song, say from a five piece band, and separate the drums, guitars, bass, and vocals into separate tracks, then mute one of them so you can play along? I guess this is the reverse of ';mastering';? Sorry...new to music production technology. What's the device I want, and how much does it cost? How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?
It is possible only to a limited degree.

You will need a software like Cooledit.

1. Split Left and Right channels of a Stereo track - this is no problem.

2. Voice Cut - Depending on the source, you can get a good or not so good Minus One (music without the voice).

3. Frequency Band Filtering - Use the graphics equalizer to filter the frequency range of a particular instrument that you want. Problem with this method is that there may be several instruments occupying the same frequency band.

4. There is also the technology to transform Wave files into Midi, not sure how good this is right now.How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?
What you want to do is kind of like separating ingredients after a cake has been baked. There is software like Adobe Audition (CoolEditPro) that can use tricks of filtering to minimize the vocal and some frequencies. To actually remove one instrument without effecting anything else, you'd need the studio master tracks.
