How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?

Is this possible? Can you take a commercially produced song, say from a five piece band, and separate the drums, guitars, bass, and vocals into separate tracks, then mute one of them so you can play along? I guess this is the reverse of ';mastering';? Sorry...new to music production technology. How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?
This can't be done. While there are ways to remove or separate certain frequencies from others, the frequencies of voices and musical Instruments all overlap. Audio ranges from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and most musical Instruments produce frequencies throughout this range. Separating them isn't possible as you can't tell if a certain frequency that appears at any given time is being produced by the trumpet, the keyboard, a voice, etc.How can I split a produced song into its separate music tracks?
Some times it is possible to phase out a particular location in the track if the mix down to stereo was created with mono mics that were pan potted instead of true stereo mic-ing. This is how some Karaoke machines eliminate the vocal from a regular recording. The phase out is not that accurate and a lot of the audio recording is lost in the process. In some future era, music might actually be sold pre-mixed and the listener could blend multiple tracks to their liking. This would negate the copyright held by record companies, so its not likely to happen anytime soon.
