What is the best way to care for and prevent split ends?

As part of my religious beliefs I do not cut my hair. I have not cut it in over 3 years. What is the best way to prevent split ends and to repair current damage? What is the best way to care for and prevent split ends?
A good way to prevent split ends is to not use excessive heat on your hair(like straightening/blow trying on high volumes). If you don't, then you're at an even better advantage of keeping split ends away! NOT brushing your hair when it is wet(but combing it gently), using a very good conditioner or leave in conditioner (pantene has many), sleep with silk or satin pillow to keep hair from becoming dry and more likely to split after sleeping are a few tips. And another way is to live a healthy lifestyle, water is known to promote not only healthy skin, but healthy hair as well!

hope this helps some. What is the best way to care for and prevent split ends?
First of all. YOU CANT FIX SPLIT ENDS. The ONLY way to get rid of them is to cut them off. If your religion does not allow you to cut your hair, then you will have to live with them. You can make them look softer by using some hair spray to spray down fly aways so that it looks longer and straighter. Other than this, avoid the sun, blow dryers, and use a shampoo/conditioner designed for damaged hair/moisturizing. Good luck
First you really need to get a trim. Something as simple as a 1/4 inch will make a HUGE difference. Next depending on your hair type use a leave-in conditioner. Don't get something off the store shelf, spend a little extra and use a professional brand. It really does make a difference. I have a lot of customers that are trying to grow their hair out, but if you don't trim and condition it will look bad.
you should stay away form the burshes come your hair with a wide tooth comb and no brushes they damage ends to the extreme. also find a goot split end protector like profectiv split ends repair
I agree with another answerer, speak with your pastor and see if you are able to get a small trim. I promise it'll make a world of difference.

If you just leave the split ends to do their thing eventually they will continue to split up the hair shaft and all you will have is a mass of long yet incredibly unhealthy hair. Not so pretty.

If all else fails and you really don't want to get a trim... all is not lost. Go to your local salon and see if they stock Wella Biotouch shampoos and conditioners. They're in a long dark yellow bottle with a coloured ring around the bottle depending on what it's made for.

I use the straigtening shampoo (blue ring), sensitive scalp shampoo (green ring) and the reconstructer conditioner (no ring).

I can't tell you want shampoo to purchase as we all have different needs for our hair, but I URGE you to try the reconstructer conditioner. It made an incredible difference to my hair - but you need to follow the instructions on the back of the bottle.

Another product to use on your hair when styling... even if you only brush, or blowdry... is the Wella SP System Professional Ends Express. It's quite expensive and comes in a very small pump bottle - but all you need is a tiny amount. My salon's been using the same little bottle for the past year on their clients, so a little goes a long way. This will temporarily seal your split ends to give the appearance of really, really healthy hair. It's not a permanent cure but it is definitely worth it.

Good luck!
One of the only ways to prevent split ends is to trim every month or so...
Every 3 months you should get your hair trimmed about an inch to keep it in good condition. Also try about once a montha good contitioning treatment paying particular attention to the ends ans smoothing a good amount over the ends. Also use a wide toothed brush to minimise split ends.

The easiest and best way is to trim it at least once a month.
If you don't get your split ends trimmed, they will eventually break all the way up to your scalp and you will have an awful mess, speak with your pastor and ask him if it is OK to not get a cut, but just a trim, so that your hair will remain healthy and long.
Try not to use a comb with fine teeth, always condition your hair and keep it moisturized (especially in the summer when it's hot)

I know you said its against your religion to cut your hair but to get rid of/prevent split ends, you must have your hair trimmed like at least 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch every month!
get your hair cut regularly, and limit combing your hair when its wet. your hair is most fragile then and it causes breakage/ spliting. use a wide tooth comb when you do comb and its wet. also be careful how tight you pull your hair back
