Why does white light split when you shine it through a prism?

White light splits into all the colours of the spectrum when it is refracted through a prism. Does anyone know why or how?Why does white light split when you shine it through a prism?
White light is various wavelengths of light so when it enters the prism, each wavelengths is refracted a different angle thus a spectrum is formed. Why does white light split when you shine it through a prism?
Thanks :)

they hv the same speed in air, but different speeds in glass
because different colours have different wavelengths and so are refracted by different angles
