Ok. I make the BEST split pea soup. It sounds weird but trust me you make it and you'll be floored. Brown some short ribs (flanken) in oil in the soup pot. Add beef bones (marrow soup bones), coarsely cut carrot, 2-3 quartered onions, 3 -4 coarsely chopped celery, 2 bay leaves, 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix, a few crushed garlic pieces, and as many split peas as you like (1 - 2 bags depending on thickness preference). Cover with water (and 1 bouillon cube) or beef broth (no bouillon cube). Let it cook on low 5 or more hours until everything is falling apart - add salt and pepper if needed. You can remove all the meat, veggies, bones - blend the soup then add the meat and the carrots back ( the onions, celery kinds get like mush and should be discarded)
i just made this last week and it came out great, although i used ham broth, im sure it will turn out good.
i dont think you should put both onions in, the main thing you wanna taste is the peas. i have seen like a million recipes for this and have tried it all different ways.
last time i used like 2 carrots and alot of celery and it came out really tasty. i sauted the onion carrots and celery together first and added the broth(already hot) and then just added the peas and ham i had into it. in the end the carrots and celery were alittle mushy in it, or should i say overly tender, but i found i actually loved it that way cause it matched the rest of the peas, same texture.
you really cant mess this up, ive seen recipes for pea soup with and without potatoes, carrots, celery, ham...
(if you got some bacon i would dice it up and saute it for a few minutes then saute the onion in that, it will kick up the flavor a bit)
heres a recipe, pretty much the same thing, i would use more celery in it, for some reason it adds a great taste.

Chef Hubert Keller just made a pea soup w cinnamon croutons.Sounds intriguing.
- can probably use the Triscuits of you have cinnamon.
add a smoked ham hock and some diced carrots for sweetness. dont forget the salt...and add a squeeze of lemon at the end.
ham cubes or bacon pieces is the bomb in split pea soup
I love Triscuits, but you should really add a Nice. Juicy. CHeEzBErGEr!
Baby carrots, leeks, and chard.
